Author: Darren Winkley

Darren is an NCAA Division I football official and three-time Ironman. After teaching elementary school for 17 years, he decided to leave the classroom and pursue his passion for fitness. Darren was introduced to Pilates by his wife, Michelle, who has been practicing Pilates for over ten years. Reluctant to go at first, figuring that it would be too easy or not masculine enough, he soon learned just the opposite. Doing Pilates on a regular basis has helped him to increase his strength and flexibility, correct muscle imbalances, and prevent injuries. Darren completed the 600-hour training program through Power Pilates to earn his Complete Apparatus and Mat certifications. He is also a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, holds three TRX certifications, and is a certified Spinning Instructor. Darren earned his BA in Liberal Studies from Cal Poly Pomona and an MA in Elementary Education from Claremont Graduate University.

Welcome!

Welcome to the official website of the SGVFOA. We are a CIF-accredited officials association providing football and flag football officials to high schools in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California.

We are always looking for new officials with or without officiating experience. Officiating is an exciting avocation that gets you involved in the great game of football. There’s no better seat in the house than being a football official on the field!

Are you a military veteran? You may be eligible for help with dues, insurance, and your uniform through Battlefields to Ballfields

Be a Ref!

Have you ever wondered, “What in the world those officials were looking at? Can’t they see that the quarterback was out of the pocket? How can they call that–the ball wasn’t even catchable!?” Have you ever thought, “I can do a better job than that!”? Well, join us! We’re always looking for new officials, with or without experience. It’s a great way to learn about high school football, get some exercise, meet new people, make a couple extra bucks, and have an incredible time!

Why Be a Ref?

Officiating football can be enjoyable for a number of reasons. Many find that the physical, mental, and emotional challenges attract them. For others, it’s being involved in football up close and personal that is the attraction. Most officials enjoy the strong camaraderie that exists among the fellow officials. Whatever the reason, you will never look at the game of football the same way once you become an official!

How Do I Become a Ref?

Fill out our membership form on the “Be a Ref” page or give us a call at (626) 66-SGVFO.

We provide comprehensive training in the rules and mechanics of high school football, which is quite a bit different than what you see on Saturdays and Sundays. Through classroom and on-field instruction, we certify you to work CIF football games and put you in contact with assignors for youth football.
